"One concern is that distance learning can have a significant impact on students’ social and emotional well-being. They are losing access to adults they trust, friends, and mental health care providers.[v] This kind of social disruption can impact brain development and increase the risk of toxic stress, which has short-term consequences for emotional and physical health as well as long-term consequences for overall well-being such as the ability to learn in school later on.[vi] Some strategies to mitigate this risk include decreasing the number of students present during each virtual session and increasing peer collaboration.[vii]"

 Distant Learning Pod Classroom

Melody's Pond Preschool understands and supports in-person classroom learning. With California's extended Shelter-in-Place, School campuses in many counties will most likely not open it's door for the 2020-2021 school year. For those schools that do open, parents are fearful that an overcrowded classroom may not be the healthiest place for learning.

To meet the needs and demands of in-person classrooms, Melody's Pond Preschool has created a Primary Elementary Classroom for Kindergarten through Fifth grade. Our Distant Learning Classroom will be led by a California credential teacher who will help each student stay on track with their school learning schedule.

The harms attributed to closed schools on the social, emotional, and behavioral health, economic well-being, and academic achievement of children, in both the short- and long-term, are well-known and significant. Further, the lack of in-person educational options disproportionately harms low-income and minority children and those living with disabilities.
